James was born on October 24th, 1882 in Mansfield, TN.  James' father was Aaron R. Sanders and his mother was Lou Cynthia Ann “Lucynthia” Barksdale.  His paternal grandparents were William Carroll Sanders and Sarah Frances Austin. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Carroll, Aaron, Sarah, Josephine, Kathryn and Lillian.  He was the oldest of the seven children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named William, Charles and Mary.
